Types of General Insurance
Health insurance
The one nobody should skip. A family floater covering hospitalisation, day-care procedures and pre- and post-hospitalisation costs — sized to what treatment actually costs in your city.
Motor insurance
Mandatory third-party cover, plus comprehensive protection for your own vehicle. The cheapest policy is rarely the one that pays fastest.
Home insurance
Covers the structure and its contents against fire, theft and natural disaster. Badly under-bought in India, given what a home is worth.
Travel insurance
Medical emergencies abroad, trip cancellation, lost baggage. Essential the moment you leave the country, where one hospital visit can cost more than the holiday.
What to weigh before you invest
Read the sub-limits
A ₹10 lakh policy with a room-rent cap can pay far less than you expect, because every associated charge is scaled to the room you are entitled to. Sub-limits are where policies quietly fail.
Waiting periods are real
Pre-existing conditions typically wait two to four years, and specific ailments have their own clocks. Buying while you are healthy is what makes the cover worth having.
Check the network and the claim record
A cashless claim only works at a network hospital. We look at whether the insurer's network covers the hospitals you would actually use, and at how reliably they settle.
Top up rather than over-buy
A base policy with a super top-up usually buys far more cover per rupee than a single large policy. It is one of the easiest wins in personal insurance.
Who General Insurance suits
If you recognise yourself here, it is worth a conversation — a free review, with no obligation and nothing to sign.
- Every family — health cover is the foundation, not an optional extra
- Homeowners with a significant asset exposed to fire or theft
- Anyone whose employer cover is their only health insurance
- Frequent travellers, especially outside India
Got questions? We have answers
What is general insurance?
Non-life insurance: it protects your assets and your health rather than your life. Health, motor, home and travel policies all sit under this umbrella, covering financial loss from an event you did not plan for.
Isn't my employer's health cover enough?
Rarely. It usually ends the day you leave the job, the sum insured is modest, and it disappears exactly when you are between jobs or retired. A personal policy you own is what keeps you covered.
What is a super top-up?
A policy that starts paying once your claims cross a set threshold in a year. Pairing a modest base policy with a large super top-up gets you a high total cover far more cheaply than one big policy.
Are premiums tax-deductible?
Under the old regime, health insurance premiums qualify for deduction under Section 80D, with a higher limit for senior-citizen parents.
Will you help at claim time?
Yes — and that is the part that actually matters. We help you assemble the paperwork, deal with the insurer and chase the settlement, rather than handing you a call-centre number.
How much health cover does a family actually need?
In a metro, a family floater below ₹10 lakh is thin — a single cardiac or cancer episode can exceed it. We usually build ₹10–15 lakh of base cover with a super top-up above it, which buys a much higher ceiling for a modest premium.
What is a room-rent cap and why does it matter so much?
It limits the daily room charge the insurer will pay. Take a costlier room and every associated charge — surgeon, anaesthetist, tests — is proportionately reduced too. It is the single most under-appreciated clause in Indian health insurance, and we screen for it first.
Individual policy or a family floater?
A floater shares one sum insured across the family and is cheaper — good while everyone is healthy. Individual policies cost more but nobody's claim eats into anyone else's cover. Once a parent is older, separate policies usually make more sense.
Are pre-existing conditions covered?
Eventually. Most policies impose a waiting period of two to four years before pre-existing conditions are covered, and specific ailments carry their own waits. Declare everything: an undeclared condition is grounds to reject the claim outright.
Cashless or reimbursement?
Cashless works only at the insurer's network hospitals and means you pay nothing upfront. Reimbursement means you pay first and claim afterwards. We check the network covers the hospitals you would realistically go to before recommending an insurer.
Does health insurance cover maternity?
Some policies do, generally after a waiting period of two to four years and with a cap on the amount. If it is on the horizon, that waiting period is the reason to buy now rather than later.
Is comprehensive motor cover worth it over third-party?
Third-party is the legal minimum and covers only damage you cause to others — not your own car. Comprehensive covers yours too. For any vehicle worth insuring, the extra premium is trivially small against the cost of replacing it.
